Structured around classical sonata procedures, the Concertstück is basically a concerto of three movements telescoped into one, in the tradition of Liszt and Saint-Saëns. The work was met with great enthusiasm, being praised by a critic of the Guide Musical as ‘attractive, full of exquisite episodes, and remarkably well written for the instrument’. This reduced version for cello and piano allows for a more accessible range of performances.
